Hummingbird Nectar Recipe

All you need is water and sugar at a ratio of 4 parts water: 1 part sugar.

The following recipe makes two cups of hummingbird nectar, but can be easily modified to make more or less — just make sure you stick with the 4:1 ratio.

  1. Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water (e.g., 1/2 cup sugar+ 2 cups water).

  2. Do not add red dye. Red dye is not necessary to attract hummingbirds and the artificial color may cause them harm.

  3. Simmer mixture on medium heat until the sugar is dissolved or pop the mixture in the microwave for long enough to heat the liquid as you would tea (it does not need to boil).

  4. Allow the mixture to cool completely, then fill your feeder(s) and place outside.

  5. Sit back and enjoy the fluttering of those tiny wings as they visit your feeder!

Homemade nectar can be stored in the refrigerator for 7-10 days.

Make sure to check your feeders every couple of days or so. If you notice that the mixture appears cloudy, it’s time to clean your feeder and replenish it with fresh nectar. On average you’ll need to clean and refill your feeder every 3-7 days (more frequently during peak summer heat and less frequently during cooler weather).

The National Audubon website also has a ton of great information on hummingbirds, if you’re looking for more!
