Germination Process

Germination and Seed Anatomy

Steps of Seed Germination

  • When conditions are right the seed starts to take in water.

  • As water is taken in, the seed swells bigger and bigger until the coat splits apart, enabling oxygen to reach the seed.

  • Oxygen helps the soon-to-be-sprout take in the food store within the seed, which produces enough energy for the plant to begin growing.

  • The plants roots grow downward into the soil and the shoot begins to sprout upwards, reaching for light.

  • As the first tiny leaves germinate, they are able to begin photosynthesis.

  • As the roots grow stronger, the plant grows larger and stronger
